Te Puna Records

National Bibliographic Database

Records are added to the National Bibliographic Database (NBD) by several methods:

  • bulk loading of current national agency records from the Library of Congress (weekly), British Library (weekly), and Australian National Bibliographic Database (fortnightly)
  • original records created by New Zealand libraries using the Cataloguing Client or WebCat
  • records imported into the NBD by New Zealand libraries via gateways to other bibliographic utilities, e.g. Research Libraries Group, Australian National Bibliographic Database, Library of Congress or the National Bibliographic Archive and
  • bulk loading of records downloaded from OCLC by New Zealand libraries.

Blackwell's Table of Contents is also bulk loaded weekly.

Batch loading of records and holdings

Digital Solutions provides batch loading of records and holdings for client libraries.

If you are interested in having your library's records batch loaded to the National Bibliographic Database please read the Policy on batch loading of catalogue records and their holdings from New Zealand libraries, located in the Policies section of User guides & policies. Then contact Digital Solutions to discuss your requirements.

Downloading of records onto local systems

There are a number of options for downloading MARC records from the NBD onto your local system:

  • if your library does full MARC cataloguing using the Cataloguing Client you can save individual records to a local file (e.g. your own C drive). You can then load the contents of this file onto your local library system
  • if your library does full MARC cataloguing or uses WebCat you can request a file of MARC 21 records for which your library has added holdings. (See: Guidelines for requesting and retrieving Te Puna Reports). You can then load contents of this file onto your local library system (if it is MARC compatible)
  • if your library uses WebCat you can save records individually (i.e. one record per file). You will need to go to MARC view, choose File-Save As, and save as a text file renaming each one.

Data review

The minimum standards for bibliographic and holdings records on Te Puna have been set by the National Library after consideration by an external advisory group of experts. The following documents are located in the Cataloguing section of User guides & policies:

We encourage you to notify Digital Solutions staff of data quality issues in records, such as errors or duplication. Please use the email address data.review@natlib.govt.nz
